The present is a period of social change, with implications for schooling. In many societies efforts are being directed to change the priorities of school activity at all levels and in all sectors. The author examines schooling in commonly used structuralist terms to identify the main social entities wherein and between which educational and other activities occur. This book serves to provide an introductory overview and first approximation of the social reality of schooling as a system of institutions, social practices and activities, and incidentally makes a number of general points about the operation of school systems. This analysis serves as a basis from which to move to examine schooling activity in the more dynamic terms of participants, priorities and strategies.
