Drawing on research from Canada, USA and Western Europe, this book extends the idea of multicultural education to put it within a global context. The core of the book focuses on human rights education as a central motivator in any commitment of multicultural education. The book is seen as a further development of an idea already expounded by the author in his previous books. He suggests that there are various reasons why the issue should be seen on a global scale, including the non-viability of a commitment to multicultural education, the need to combine with and learn from other curriculum reform movements which have similar aims and objectives, the need to recognize the phenomenon of cultural diversity, the need to learn from the policies and practices of other nations and regions, and the need to re-enforce an awareness of our responsibilities for the environment, now and for future generations. The author expresses an interest in asserting the rights of the child as a member of society, mentioning the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.
