When David Gower was restored to the England captaincy in April of 1989 he joined Ted Dexter, newly installed as chairman of the committee, in a partnership widely expect to revitalize the fortunes of the English Test team. A few months later, those hopes had been shattered. England had lost the ashes series 4-0 to bitter rivals Australia and Gower had lost his job. The story of these turbulent months is the central feature of Gower's book. He tells of his relations with Dexter and the team manager, Micky Stewart, recalling how vital decisions were taken and honestly recounts his emotions during times when he considered resignation. The saga of losing his job and the shock of losing his place in the England team for the winter tour is also examined in detail. The book continues with Gower recording the reasons for his decision to give up the captaincy of his county, Leicestershire. He takes a thoughtful look at developments in the English and international game, including the intrusive tour to South Africa. Finally, he reports from the West Indies as a spectator on England's performances without him.
