95% of people who feel ill and decide to consult their doctor can still only be assessed by clinical judgement. Blood tests, X-rays or other scientific investigations performed to clarify the diagnosis, are invariably negative. The big unknown in modern medicine is not cancer or heart disease but the cause of all those niggling nerves, coughs and collywobbles. My psychoanalysis of the situation took me to Canada including the Arctic where I worked on the military front line of the cold war and London in the so-called 'swinging sixties' where I was able to study the effects of cannabis, cocaine and heroin. Having resigned in disgust from the NHS in 1973 for its oppressive and exploitative terms and conditions for family doctors, I emigrated to practice in Muslim culture on an oil field but was again dogged by remuneration problems. The book concludes with fresh ideas about those popular topics of conversation, religion, politics and 'sex'.
