For several generations people moved away from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, many by choice, many forced out of by landowners in the Clearances. Hardships, exertions and acts of defiance marked the migration of the crofters. The author travelled through Scotland and Canada to find out which stories remain in the memories of their descendants. On Shetland he heard how flocks of sheep, expelled from good grassland, died at the new boundary fence with their faces towards the old pastures. The author evokes the terrain in which the crofters struggled to keep a footing in their homeland and brings before us the many women and men of both countries as they recount in thier own words the agony of their forebears.
