First published in 1953, this revised edition is aimed at students of book design, showing "classic" typefaces which have become accepted as standard in book production. It discusses 20 different typefaces, all cut by Monotype (many under Stanley Morison's direct supervision), telling the history behind the letters, who first cut them and why, how they were used, and how they should be used. Many of them have now been translated into digital settings for a new generation of typographers. The book describes Morison's role in the production of the typefaces, and how the modern versions became accessible under his direction. Each essay is set in the typeface it discusses.
