David Sheppard was an extraordinary man. An accomplished cricketer, he captained both his county, Sussex, and England, and his University cricketing record has not been beaten. Ordained into the Church of England, he worked in the inner-cities of London and Liverpool. He criticised Margaret Thatcher's policies for their effects on the poor, and was involved in peacemaking, both after the Toxteth riots, and between the left wing council and the Conservative government. He worked alongside the Catholic Bishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, to bring reconciliation, and healing after the Heysel riot and Hillsborough.
