Of all the Irish Army's many United Nations missions, the UNIFIL mission to Lebanon has been the longest and most dangerous. Set against the background of Ireland's earlier UN involvement, especially in the Congo in the early 1960s and in Sinai following the Yom Kippur War in 1973, this book traces the story of Ireland's UNIFIL involvement, with the author having access to top UN intelligence sources which reveal the exact circumstances in which some of the Irish peace-keeping troops were killed. The book includes an account of Private Kevin Joyce's kidnap of April 1981, and names the man who led the gang which seized Joyce and killed his comrade, Private Hugh Doherty. It also includes an interview with John O'Mahony, the sole survivor of the "enclave killings" when the Israeli-backed South Lebanese Army kidnapped three Irish peace-keeping troops and murdered two of them.
