The limit state code BS 5950 regulates the structural use of steelwork in building in both simple and continuous construction. This book describes the design theory and code requirements for common structural connections, elements and building frames through a structural learning course. Realistic examples of practical applications are used throughout, including full illustrations of sketching and detailing principles and a complete building frame design for a lattice roof building with crane. The book contains several chapters explaining computer applications for steel design, giving programme listings for the design of beams, columns and bases and a complete plane frame programme for building frame analysis. For this second edition, the book has been updated to comply with the recently revised code of practice for hot-rolled sections. In addition, a new chapter on portal design has been included to cover this very important type of single-storey structure. Both elastic and plastic methods are given. This book should provide a guide which should prove of interest to students of structural and civil engineering and for engineers and designers in industry.
