This is a textbook on international relations, designed to introduce students to the subject, provide a critical sweep over conventional wisdom and point to useful avenues of further study. The book defines a "great power", charts the progress of the world economy, covers conflict in terms of secret intelligence, brute force and coercive bargaining, deals with economic statecraft and goes on to cover the states-system, diplomacy, peacekeeping and the role of the UN. This second edition has been updated and revised. In particular, chapter five has been reorganized in terms of the argument. A new chapter has been added on the world economy; and new material has been added on nationalism, foreign aid, intervention and unconventional diplomacy.
