Currently the educational system is moving away from assessment based on examinations taken in order to classify, order and rank people, towards assessment systems which look for ability to master information and for records of personal achievement over a period of time. The onus for learning is being shifted from the teacher to the learner. The roles of teacher and learner are rapidly changing with the teacher being seen as a manager and organizer of learning rather than as a presenter of knowledge. This book considers the possible roles of learners and teachers and examines the implications for evaluation and assessment when more responsibility for learning is moved to the learners. Techniques of evaluating and assessing appropriate to the facilitation of learning are discussed. Ideas are illustrated with numerous case studies, while suggestions for group work and discussion are included at the end of each section.
