Applied Analytical Methods Survival Guides takes the ""scary"" out of practical, applied uses of statistics and analytical methods. Though helpful for the budding statistician, its main mission is to give students in social science disciplines who have had little exposure to the usefulness of statistics in everyday working life, the basic tools to survive both qualitative and quantitative research methods courses.
Keep in mind that this textbook takes a different approach to statistics that can be applied across all disciplines. Here we take a decisively social science approach, using examples that will hopefully be relatable in the major you are pursuing.
The main intention of this book is to introduce students to numeracy. Whereas learning to be literate is to learn to be a better reader, numeracy, as the term is being used here, is intended to provide students with better understanding of how to interpret statistical output. It is not enough to know how to calculate the numbers, you should also know how the statistical analysis could be used, and unfortunately in some cases, abused.
