Forensic anthropology professor, Gideon Oliver accompanies his wife to the remote, idyllic Isle of Scilly. Julie has been invited to the home of Vasily Kozlov, a scientist and eccentric millionaire who lives in the sixteenth century Star Castle. Here, he regularly hosts a consortium of ecological experts with very differing opinions - which makes for some extremely heated arguments. Gideon looks forward to pottering around the nearby Neolithic sites, but before day one is through, a newer bone is unearthed and all signs point to murder. Just as Gideon and the local police puzzle over the bone's origin, someone else is murdered at Star Castle. Could two murders within a couple of years just be bad luck?
