Three great globalizations have structured the culture and power of the modern world. The first was characterized by territorial colonialism and began in 1492. Its dominant event was the discovery and conquest of the Americas. The second, dominated by economic imperialism, was in full swing by the time of Marx's Communist Manifesto and the completion of the English takeover of India (1848-1857). The third, which is just beginning, marks the emergence of the American Empire and its cadre of transnational organizations, corporations and communications networks in a virtual or cybernetic fabric. The first globalization was territorial and driven by natural resources, human and environmental. The second was financial, driven by computational laws about markets and how best to maximize them. The third globalization is driven by virtuality, an ideology/ culture/communications nexus backed by overwhelming military force. Postcolonialism and Globalization is a tour-de-force history that recapitulates the five-hundred-year postcolonial march and its collision with the forces of globalization.
It explores the quiet revolutions accompanying the three great globalizations of modern Euro-America - specifically, the realm of the unsaid, the people left behind, those that suffered inordinately to make such transformations possible. It does so from the point of view of the present, examining the legacies of colonial and imperial control in order to chart a people's history of modern progress, focussing on those who benefit least from Western prosperity and those who stand the best chance for transforming it in future. Postcolonialism and Globalization will rethink postcolonialism for its proponents as an on-going process of global modernization, one that balances a celebration of globalization with an historical perspective that contextualizes the present within a half-millennium of colonization.
