Excavations on the site of the College of the Vicars Choral in York revealed an extensive complex of college buildings - the most comprehensive archaeological study yet of one of Britain's Vicars Choral Colleges. The archaeology tracked the transformation of the site from agricultural plot in the early 13th century to the peak of its prosperity in the mid-14th century and subsequent rebuilding work through to the next century. The investigation of the growth and decline of the college buildings provides a valuable glimpse of the varying fortunes of a medieval urban religious house and the detailed reports on the material remains contribute to a greater understanding of the daily lives of the vicars.
