Yves Montand was an actor and a singer known for his roles in such films as "Le Casque D'Or", "The Wages of Fear", "Let's make Love", "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources". He was romantically involved with Edith Piaf (who first encouraged him to sing), with Marilyn Monroe, and - most significantly - with Simone Signoret. He was a fervent Communist who renounced his allegiance to the party in 1968, and he later became an unofficial ambassador for France, meeting leaders from all over the world. He died in 1991 and his story draws together figures as diverse as Kruschev, Vaclav Havel, Gerard Depardieu and Arthur Miller.
