This work examines the roots of the controversy over the teaching of Constantin Stanislavsky's "Method" of acting, (which came about when Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theater visited the United States in 1923) and especially the evolution of the Studio and the emergence of Lee Strasberg as its head after disagreements with Studio founder Elia Kazan, Robert Lewis, and Stella Adler. Strasberg's background and philosophies on acting, and actual encounters between him and Studio members as he applies his theories are fascinatingly detailed.
