This is the first comprehensive microscale chemistry laboratory manual that covers experiments and techniques. It introduces over twenty new reaction productions to the undergraduate laboratory, and uses a milligram approach, as opposed to the traditional multigram approach. New to this edition is the optional scale-up procedure for 16 of the microscale experiments; expanded discussion of distillation, TLC, and acid-base extraction; theory and use of spinning band fractionation columns, and inclusion of qualitative organic analysis tests. There are also more exercises, and greater use of infrared and NMR spectra. The authors focus on the experimental aspects of organic chemistry, rather than the theoretical issues. Modern purification and separation techniques used include gas chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and column chromatography.
