The Australasian region is home to the greatest diversity of cephalopods - squids, cuttlefish, octopuses - in the world. This book provides insights into the biology and behaviour of cephalopods. From the giant squid to the deadly blue ringed octopus, the secret lives of cephalopods are revealed. An introduction to the features of the main cephalopod groups is followed by accounts of over 60 species. Each species account includes a distribution map and identification notes which summarize the main features to look for. While the book focuses on spcies found in relatively shallow coastal waters (typically less than 100 metres), a few of the more bizarre deep-water species are included. A comprehensive section illustrating cuttlebones should enable users to identify most of the species found in relatively shallow water.
