This is a full-length defence of philosophical relativism. It assembles the principal lines of attack in the ancient world (chiefly against Protagoras) and the various lines of attack that have been developed in contemporary Anglo-American and continental European philosophy. The chief figures of both traditions are canvassed in the development of a wide-ranging argument that places relativism within the context of a set of more fundamental issues, decisive for our own time, from which its own fate cannot be separate. Though it deals with a number of strenuous technical questions regarding the coherence of relativism, the book is written in an informal style. It aspires to be both an instructive and compendious introduction to a range of issues and an original contribution to the topic.
