The world's best-known French detective, Jules Maigret first appeared in print in 1931, subsequently featuring in 76 novels and 28 short stories. Perennially popular, his adventures have been frequently adapted, with actors including Michael Gambon and Rowan Atkinson taking on the role of the Parisian policeman on television.
In these radio plays, Maigret and Simenon reminisce about five of their greatest cases. An unknown young woman is found dead on a rainy Paris pavement; a wife reports the sudden disappearance of her lawyer husband; and Maigret searches for the secret behind a man's odd behavior in Brussels and subsequent suicide in Bremen. Plus, Maigret travels to the coast to try and prove a village schoolmaster innocent of murder; and a chance encounter with a former classmate leads to a tricky problem for Maigret.
