In this text, Marie Borroff's translations of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Pearl" are collected together with a new verse translation of "Patience", bringing together three of the four works by the anonymous "Pearl-Poet." A retelling of the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, "Patience" turns the Book of Jonah into a human comedy, though the poem also includes a number of serious passages that enlarge its meaning and reinforce its moral message.
