I wanted to love this - and the few essays that I did, I really really did. But the rest, while well written and dryly funny, I didn't. It wasn't like I was dragging my feet through this, I just felt myself being like, "alright then" at the end of most essays. Maybe that was the point, but at I picked this up based on a recommendation that Irby writes stuff that makes you laugh out loud a lot, and I was at the point of quarantine where I SO needed that, so maybe I went in with the wrong expectations based on my sense of humor and no familiarity with her work.
Reviewers seem to love her newer collections a little more, I'll still check them out, now that I'm used to her writing style. Don't write this off because of my meh review, humor is subjective.
