No other US battleship saw as much service through as many wars as the USS New Jersey. One of the iconic Iowa-class vessels, it was a 'fast battleship', designed for aircraft carrier escort and coastal bombardment duties. A flagship for Admiral Halsey in World War II, it fought across the Pacific from the Philippines to Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. Recommissioned for both the Korean and Vietnam wars, it used its 16-inch guns for shore bombardment. Reactivated one last time in the 1980s, it supported US and UN operations during the Lebanese Civil War. Now a museum ship anchored in Camden, New Jersey across the river from Philadelphia, the New Jersey gives visitors the experience of what it was like to live and fight aboard a battleship, as well as teaching about the history it was part of. Written by the ship's head curator, the book will explore the history of the New Jersey and the men who sailed it, as well as the technical operations of the ship, including the inner workings of its massive turrets and guns.
