An anecdotal history of Winston Churchill's foreign journeys - for journalistic, political or holiday purposes, and in war and peace - as told by his granddaughter Celia Sandys, who travels in his footsteps. As in her account of Churchill in the Boer War ("Churchill Wanted Dead or Alive"), Sandys retraces her grandfather's journeys throughout the world and talks to people who knew and entertained him wherever he went. Stories include those of family and friends, secretaries, bodyguards, nurses, as well as hosts and hostesses from private houses and hotels. The text starts with the famous cruise on Onassis's yacht "Christina", where the author was present, and ends with his last journey from Monte Carlo (she was there as well). The places In between, for example, North America (his mother's homeland), Morocco, Italy, Cuba, Egypt, the Middle East, Madeira, and France also feature. The colour illustrations include many of Churchill's own paintings, but although the main story tells of the "private man" the world of international politics that Churchill helped to shape is never absent for long.
