Are we born into this world intrinsically sinful, predisposed to evil? St Augustine passionately argued that we are; his opponents thought the notion an insult to a good God. While the book trailed off at the end (the story seemed to lose some coherence as Jacobs began talking about the modern world), the book was nevertheless well worth the read.
