The authors explain the ways in which sport and leisure are affected by, and contribute to, political division in Northern Ireland. Specific attention is paid to the general relationship between sports and politics, the political profile of the provinces' three main football codes, (Gaelic, rugby union and association), the politics of leisure provision, and the various attempts made to use sport and recreation for the purposes of cross-community reconciliation. This is an aspect of Northern Irish society ignored by most writers on "the Troubles".
