Over the last 20 years James Casebere has constructed increasingly complex models that are carefully assembled then photographed in his studio. These table-sized models are made of simple materials and draw on architectural, art historical and cinematic sources. His earlier work focused on American mythologies such as the western and the suburban home, but since 1992 his subject has been institutional spaces and the relationship between social control and structure. These newer works depict detailed architectural reconstructions of disused hospitals, hotels and schools: communal spaces that are paradoxically abandoned and solitary. Casebere is widely acclaimed as the most important artist working in the genrc of 'constructed photography'. This is the first complete monograph to survey the development and career of this groundbreaking artist, whose work has been shown at MOMA (New York and Oxford), Ikon Gallery (Birmingham) and Lisson Gallery (London).
