Daniel Buren (b. 1938) is widely considered one of the most important conceptual artists working today. Using his trademark vertical stripes and mirrored surfaces, Buren's provocative spatial interventions have transformed a variety of sites, including streets, stairways, trains, parks, plazas, markets, theatres, bridges, storefronts, galleries and museums all over the world. Buren first began working with the striped awning canvas that has become his signature motif in 1965; operating as a neutral sign for the practice of art, this 'visual tool' works to expose the conditions surrounding its own exhibition while providing new experiences of space, movement and perception within existing sites.
