Nery was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and came to the United States on the Freedom Flights as a political refugee in 1971, along with her parents, her four sisters, and her niece Maria Elena.In Cuba, she wrote many poems, which she mailed to her aunt Marta Gonzalez, who was already living in the US. After she got married, her husband, Bob, encouraged her to publish them. She published a book of poetry entitled Algo de mí (Something from Me) in 1983.In November 2020, she published the book entitled Path to Freedom, which became a best seller on Amazon and for Halo Publishing Company in January 2021. In April 2021, she published its Spanish translation, Camino a la Libertad. She received a congratulatory letter for being one of Halo's Best-Selling Authors.Nery is also a music composer and has participated in several music festivals, including Festival OTI (Organization of Television Ibero-American) of Miami, where her song, Quisiera Paz (I Want Peace) was one of the finalists. She also participated in the ACCA (Association of Critics and Commentators of Arts) music competition, where in 1988 she received second place for her song By the Seashore (A la Orilla del Mar), and her mother, Elena Maria, also a composer, received first place for her song Wind (Viento).She and her husband, Bob, have been dedicated community volunteers through Civitan International since 1988. They have formed many Civitan and Junior Civitan Clubs in Florida. Internationally, they formed the Civitan Cancun Club in Mexico and the Mount Everest Civitan Club in Nepal. They both received the Civitan International Honor Key, the highest honor given by this organization. They have also received proclamations and recognitions from Miami-Dade County city mayors and commissioners.
