Shannon Luders-Manuel is a mixed race scholar and writer with a background in such diverse areas as rhetoric, linguistics and creative writing. She received her Bachelor's Degree in English from Southern Oregon University and her Masters in English from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her thesis was titled: "'I am on the Coloured Side': The Roles of the White Suitor and the Black Mother in the Tragic Mulatta Narrative."
