Juliet Fazan McMaster grew up in a British family in Kenya, and this book grows out of her childhood life and imaginings in that mountainous tropical landscape, as well as from her experience as a competitive fencer and her on-going engagement with young people. She lives and writes in Edmonton in Canada, and she continues to gather her inspiration from climbing the Rocky Mountains and scaling Hawaii's volcanoes.
