Cyrille Regis, MBE, was born in French Guiana in 1958 and moved to England aged five. He was a part-time footballer for Hayes in the Isthmian League and training to be an electrician when, in 1977, West Bromwich Albion paid a GBP5,000 transfer fee for his services. Cyrille's career took off and he won international honours, playing at time when crowd violence and racial hatred were at their worst, but he helped to change attitudes, something that has continued since retiring as a player.
