Cathy Salvatore was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. She was president of the Future Nurses Club in Trenton Central High School and graduated in 1962. She took a course at Stratford Career Institute of Children's Literature in 2005, then worked as a Certified Home Health Aide and Nursing Assistant for over 12 years.
