The Midwives' Quilt: A Tale of Conflict & Intrigue in the Smoky Mountains is Dr. Gail Palmer's first historical fiction book. This is the fourth book the Blount County native has added to her growing list of works published through Smoky Mountain Publishers. All of Dr. Palmer's works are fact-based stories and events about the people who lived in the Smoky Mountains during the late 1800s and early 1900s, some of them her relatives who lived in Cades Cove. Another book, Cemeteries of the Smokies, lists all of the more than 151 known cemeteries within Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is scheduled to be published soon by Great Smoky Mountains Association. Born in Maryville, Tennessee, Dr. Palmer graduated from Clearwater High School in Florida. She completed three degrees at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville―B.S. and M.S. from the College of Communications, majoring in journalism; the Ph.d. from the College of Education, majoring in cultural studies. In 2013, Palmer received a Community History Award from East Tennessee Historical, nominated by Betty B. Best, Journal Editor, Blount County Genealogical & Historical Society.
