B.B. Chaudhuri used to tech History at the University of Calcutta. Rural history of colonial eastern India has long been his major research interest. Professor Chaudhuri has contributed to The Cambridge Economic History of India, Volume II (1983). He has nearly finished editing Economic History of India: Eighteenth to Twentieth Century, a volume in two parts sponsored by Centre for Studies in Civilizations, New Delhi and included in its Project of the History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture'. He is the author of the Part I of the volume: Peasant History of Late Pre-colonial and Colonial India: Eighteenth to Mid-twentieth Century. He was the President of Modern India Section of the India History Congress in 1977.
