A retired engineer, Andrew Dutfield lived in the UK and Southern Africa before immigrating to Canada, which has been home for 26 years. His interest in history, immigrant history in particular and fascination with the relative isolation of Hecla Island and its original Icelandic settlement, sparked the inspiration for Death at the Point. For the last five years, he has been chair and president of the Manitoba Writers' Guild. He also enjoys composing music in his basement studio and cross-country skiing.

Dutfield lives in Winnipeg and on Hecla Island with Jackie, his wife of 40 years. They have three children and five grandchildren.
