George Anelay was, from 2004 until 2012, Heritage Outreach Officer for Chichester District Council, in which role he directed the excavations at Middle Barn, alongside similar excavations in and around the city of Chichester in West Sussex, including the investigation of the city’s Roman and later defences as part of the City Walls project (2009-2010). Alongside this position he has been, since 2001, Director of West Sussex Archaeology Ltd, a small commercial unit working mainly in developer-funded archaeology. He has a long-term interest in archaeological projects that include a high-proportion of volunteers, and as such has directed excavations at Liss Roman Villa (2005-7) and on the Bronze Age barrow cemetery on Petersfield Heath (2014-7), both in Hampshire.
