Chantura Rao graduated in English literature from Sophia College, Mumbai in 1994. She did a diploma course in Social Communication Media from Sophie Polytechnic the following year. Although she began her writing career as a journalist with the Saturday Times, Chantura ended her liason with non-fiction writing in 2003. She turning to telling stories. Chantura is a author of the children's fantasy novel Amie and the Chawl of Colour (Puffin 2014). Subseqently her short stories have appeared in The Puffin Book of Bedtime Stories, The Puffin Book of Funny Stories, Puffin's favorite Stories for Girls and Scholastic India's The Moustache Maharishi and Other Unlikely Stories. She has rewritten Panchatantra stories for Ladybird, several stories for a UNICEF project and condacts writing workshops for children. Meanwhile, Upriver is her first novel for adults. Chantura lives in Mumbai, raising her two smaill daughters by day, and writing fiction by night.
