Everton Barrett was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He attended Kingston College. and after graduating in 1971, he became a trainee newspaper journalist at The Gleaner Company. Later that year he immigrated to New York attending Brooklyn College, all the while working as a computer operator in the early years of computing. Barrett became a technical manager for a number of corporations including Citibank, Brooklyn Union Gas, and Goldman-Sachs. Barrett joined IBM, in 1985, as a systems programmer and attended the University of New Haven to acquire an MBA. After nine years at IBM he went into independent programming consulting. Barrett has consulted for companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, UPS and Lowes. He also worked as an applications development programming manager for University of South Florida and the CDC (Center for Disease Control) Barrett is presently retired and living in Florida, where he mentors young entrepreneurs and engages in philanthropic activities.
