Her mother, Valery Justin, was a pre-school teacher and her father, Steven Rose, was a cartoonist for The New Yorker and other publications. She has a younger sister, Mary. After graduating from Princeton High School in 1982, Martin attended Smith College from 1982-1986: she studied early-childhood education and child psychology. This non-profit organization distributes new books to children, establishes libraries in under-served areas and provides financial support for art, education, and literacy programs in addition to programs for abused and stray animals. Rose has married twice. She had two children, John and Michael, with her first husband. The marriage ended in a divorce. Her second husband, Jack Morrison, is a chef and cooking instructor.
