Lu Nei was born in 1973 in Suzhou, west of Shanghai, China. The author of Young Babylon held many jobs before becoming a writer. He has been a factory worker, a shop assistant, a salesperson, a warehouse manager, a radio announcer, and an advertising creative. He now lives in Shanghai.
