Bernard Whalen was appointed to the New York Police Department in 1981. In 1989 he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the NYPD Office of Labor Relations at One Police Plaza. He is a member of the NYPD Honor Legion, Emerald Society and Steuben Society. He and his father Jon Whalen, former New York state corrections officer and retired English teacher, co-authored the novel Justifiable Homicide (Ballantine Books, 2000). Lieutenant Whalen has had police-related articles published in SPRING 3100, the NPYD's official publication, THE FINEST, the PBA's official magazine and Police Chief Magazine.
