The author, Julie Tanser is a child of the '60s. Growing up in the suburbs of Queens, her family picked up and moved to the East Village during the time of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, Janice Joplin, The Doors, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Woodstock. To give an example, she worked as a bookkeeper, in a dog grooming salon, print production, waitress, selling encyclopedias, a corporate desk job, film editing both in NY and LA, and reading scripts for William Morris Agency.
