BRYAN BUNCH began reporting the history of science in 1959, writing The Year in Science for a Grolier yearbook. While doing graduate work in mathematics at NYU, he began writing about history of mathematics as well. Along with publishing several books about science, mathematics, medicine, and technology, in 1988 he began working with European physics writer Alexander Hellemans on full-scale histories. His approach to scientific and mathematical topics from the beginning has been chronology based, in the belief that the way to understand the present begins with knowing the past. It is also recognized in his fictional novel Before Eureka: The Adventures of Young Archimedes.
