Per Wastberg was born in Stockholm in 1933. He founded Swedish Amnesty International in 1963 and was heavily involved in the antiapartheid struggle in South Africa. From 1976-82 he was editor-in-chief of Sweden's largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, where he is still a critic and columnist. He writes novels, poetry and works of political history. He has been a member of the Nobel Committee since 1998.
