Goldsmith advertising blurbs stated that Dorothy Wayne was the wife of Noel Sainsbury, author of the "Billy Smith Flying Ace" and "Bill Bolton" aviation series. Not true, apparently. According to Noel Sainsbury's granddaughter, Sainsbury himself actually wrote the books of the Dorothy Dixon series. The use of the Dorothy Wayne pseudonym ("Dorothy" was the name of his wife, "Wayne" the name of his daughter) must have been due to the commonly-held publishing premise that books intended for an audience of girls will sell better if written by a female author.
