Alice V. Roberts was born in Los Angeles, California on December 12, 1955 to Carol Butler and Alfred John Roberts Jr. She was raised in the Hancock Park area and attended Third Street Elementary School, Marymount Junior School, and Marymount High School. Alice has one older brother John who lives in Oregon.
Alice graduated from Marymount High School in 1974 and moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, to attend Northern Arizona University. She met her future husband Gerald Paul Butterbrodt when her sorority Gamma Phi Beta was invited to his Sigma Nu fraternity party.
Gerald was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He was the third of nine children born to Donald and Rita Butterbrodt.
Alice and Gerald were married on August 7, 1976 at the Saint James Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. They then made their home in Flagstaff. Alice and Gerald had two daughters: Karen Lynn born on September 2, 1977 and Laura Jean born on April 15, 1980.
In 1994 the couple separated and their divorce was final in 1996. On September 16, 2001, Alice was married to Frank Leonard Stattman who was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Frank had one son who is deceased.
Both of Alice’s daughters are married. Karen and her husband live in Scottsdale, Arizona with their two daughters. Laura and her husband live in Maine and have one son and three daughters.
Alice is the author of “Living Day to Day with Severe Osteoporosis” and “Living Day to Day with Severe Osteoporosis, 2012, Update”. At age 35, doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona diagnosed Alice with severe osteoporosis. In 2004, just after turning 49, she had a bone mineral density (BMD) test- her worst to date. Her local doctor told her that she was a liability to her employer (and any other as well) and she should file for long-term disability. Alice’s lowest score was -4.5. That was a score expected from someone in their 90’s- not a woman who had just turned 49 a week earlier.
As one of the country’s fastest growing epidemics, osteoporosis is just beginning to receive the public attention it deserves. Due to her age and the severity of her osteoporosis, Alice wants to speak out, draw awareness to the disease and its causes, and encourage people to see their family doctor and get a bone density test. It is her mission to increase awareness, education, and encourage prevention.
Alice is currently writing a novel- one in a series of six. She is a member of the Arizona Authors Association, Romance Writers of America, Writers and Readers of Distinct Fiction, Toastmasters International, and is an advocate for the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Alice and her husband live near the Red Rocks of Sedona, Arizona with their Siamese cat and black Lab. When she is not writing Alice enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, and spending time with her married daughters and grandchildren in Scottsdale, Arizona and Cornish, Maine.
