ALAIN LOCKE (1885-1954), most noted as the father of the Harlem Renaissance, was a distinguished American scholar, earning degrees from Harvard University and honored as the first African-American Rhodes Scholar. In addition to teaching philosophy at Howard University for nearly forty years, Locke heavily influenced black artists of the time and impacted American culture.
