Eminent biologist, philosopher, and educator Julian S. Huxley (1182-1975)—grandson of T.H. Huxley ("Darwin's bulldog") and brother of the novelist Aldous Huxley—was a pivotal figure in establishing the Modern Synthesis of neo-Darwinian evolutionary theort in the 1940s and the author of many books, including Evolution: The Modern Synthesis, Essays of a Biologist, The Science of Life, and, with Sir Gavin de Beer, Elements of Experimental Embryology.
